Don’t Rush to Buy the Dip in Ford Stock Just Yet

There has been a broader market selloff amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East. The meltdown has created some good buying opportunities, but not every stock that has come off its 2025 highs is a buy. One legacy automaker, Ford (F), still does not look like a compelling buy despite having fallen over 15% from its recent highs.

Investor positioning in the options market is extremely bearish: The S&P 500's 3-month put-call skew is up to ~0.50, near the highest in 3 years. Put-call skew measures how much more expensive put options are relative to call options, with higher readings signaling greater investor fear. By comparison, the average 3-month single-stock put-call skew is up to ~0.15, the highest since August. Furthermore, the S&P 500's 1-month skew is up to ~0.53, the highest since the 2022 bear market. This nearly matches the levels seen during the 2020 pandemic crash of ~0.56. Is Wall Street getting overly bearish?

Yes, AI is a bubble, we hear that on a loop. Hyperscalers are investing way too much, apparently. Fine. Let’s park that debate for a second. But have you seen this ARR chart from Anthropic, the parent company of the Claude model? What is this thing even doing. It has to be the fastest sprint to 20 billion in annual recurring revenue in history.

The cost of shipping crude oil from the US to Asia is skyrocketing: It now costs over $29 million to hire a supertanker to take 2 million barrels of crude from the US Gulf Coast to China, the highest on record. Shipping rates have DOUBLED in just two weeks. This means shipping alone costs ~$14.50 per barrel, or a record ~20% of the oil price at current WTI levels of ~$75. The cost of a supertanker as a percentage of the WTI crude oil price has quadrupled since August, when it was ~5%. This comes as the ongoing war in the Middle East has effectively shut down traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, forcing Asian buyers to turn to US barrels. Many supertanker bookings to load crude from the US Gulf Coast have already been canceled over the last 24 hours as costs become unsustainable. Oil supply chains are under historic stress.
