Gulf economies at risk of worst slump since 1990s on Iran war

The ongoing conflict with Iran is projected to significantly impact economic growth in the Gulf's largest economies, including severe GDP contractions for Qatar and Kuwait if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. While Saudi Arabia and the UAE have alternative oil export routes, they still face economic challenges, with potential GDP drops and risks to non-oil sectors, exacerbated by disruptions in oil exports and higher crude prices.

China’s economy surprises with rebound but Iran war risks loom

China's industrial production and retail sales surged in the first two months of 2026, with growth rates of 6.3% and 2.8% respectively, before geopolitical tensions in the Middle East began to impact global trade and energy markets. Despite stronger-than-expected domestic economic activity, the ongoing conflict could disrupt future growth, prompting Chinese policymakers to delay further economic stimulus measures.

Market liquidity is collapsing amid the Iran war: Liquidity in S&P 500 futures is down to just $5.1 million, near the lowest since the April 2025 "Liberation Day." Top-of-book depth has fallen -80% since the start of the year and is now -61% below the historical average of ~$13 million. Levels below $7 million usually signal market stress, according to Goldman Sachs. This means it now takes just a few million Dollars in orders to move the S&P 500 by one tick. To put this differently, every time an institution tries to buy or sell in size, the impact on the market price is now much larger than during normal market conditions. Brace for more market volatility.

The Pound to Dollar exchange rate dropped towards three-month lows near 1.3250 due to weak UK GDP data and rising energy prices, heightening recession concerns. History suggests oil shocks are buying opportunties: Over the last 40 years, the S&P 500's 12-month return following a 2-day oil spike of +20% has been +24%. In 6 out of 7 instances since 1986, the S&P 500 has been higher 1 year after such an oil spike. The strongest recovery was +54% following the 2020 pandemic crash, driven by a massive stimulus response from central banks and governments. The only negative outcome was -11% during the 2008 Financial Crisis. Put differently, every oil shock over the last 40 years that did not lead to a prolonged recession was followed by a strong rally. Oil shocks are historically brief and provide long-term buying opportunities.
